NEW ORLEANS - Coast Guard and Air Force rescue crews, who were en route to rescue the crew of the Bulk Freighter Antalina were forced to abort the rescue, Friday, Sept. 12, 2008. The rescue crews were forced to land in Lake Charles, La. due to prohibitive heavy weather.
The HU-25 Falcon rescue jet was able to reach the Antalina and observed 20-foot seas, 80-knot winds and visibility as low as a half-mile.

“Unfortunately there were 80-knot winds on scene, well beyond the operating conditions for the air crews to safely rescue the crew of the Antalina. The safety of the rescue crews and the crew of the Antalina are of the utmost importance to us. The Coast Guard will continue to maintain contact with the crew of the Antalina and monitor their situation very closely,” said Rear Adm. Joel R. Whitehead, commander, Eighth Coast Guard District.

Now, the Coast Guard is flying in to rescue them.A woman and her dog waited to long to leave and got stuck in flood waters.
According to a local station, the Coast Guard got more than 150 calls for help from the Bolivar and Crystal Beach areas Friday.
Because they're using helicopters, they're only able rescue about three to five people at the time. So they're having to make several trips. Officials are trying to work quickly, because once the winds get too strong, they won't be able to fly.

Rescuers in Galveston, Texas, were going door-to-door Saturday to check on the estimated 20,000 people who failed to flee Hurricane Ike, which has slowed to tropical storm status.
As of 2 p.m. local time Saturday, the Galveston Fire Department had taken 22 people to a shelter in a high school on the coastal island, which was without electricity or water pressure.
"We are in a recovery mode," Galveston Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas said in a press conference Saturday afternoon. "This eye came right over us, stayed a while and went on, but it brought a lot of damage to our city."
Galveston City Manager Steve LeBlanc said the island would be closed while authorities assess damages, including to the causeway, which was in "bad shape" because of debris and road damage.
"The road buckled in a number of places," LeBlanc said. "Even if we opened it up you couldn't get through."
Ike was downgraded Saturday to a tropical storm 11 hours after it crashed ashore as a Texas-sized hurricane that walloped southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana.

This is amazing U.S. Coast Guard footage. B-roll of Air Station Houston HH-65C rescue helicopter crew pulling citizens out of flood waters on a rescue mission along Bolivar Peninsula during Hurricane Ike along the south eastern Texas coast line. Scenes include rescue worker being lowered from a helicopter to rescue civilians trapped by flood waters.
A little trivia for you: After Hurricane Katrina, the only U.S. government entity rescuing the victims within minutes after the storm was the U.S. Coast Guard. They were the first to rescue victims and they never let up.
